About The course
About National Certification Examination for Energy Managers & Energy Auditors (Under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001)
- The certification examination will be conducted based on the syllabus approved by the Bureau.
Eligibility Criteria & Guidelines
A. Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
- Candidates for the Energy Manager’s certification examination must meet one of the following qualifications:
- Graduate Engineer/Architect with 3 years of work experience involving use of energy in operation, maintenance, planning, energy management, energy efficiency & energy conservation, building design or building energy management
- Post-Graduate in Engineering/Architecture with 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Graduate Engineer/Architect with post-graduate degree in Management and 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Diploma Engineer or equivalent with 6 years of relevant work experience.
- Post Graduate in Physics/Electronics/Chemistry (with Physics & Mathematics at graduation level) with 3 years of relevant work experience.
B. Certified Energy Auditor(CEA)
- Candidates for the Energy Auditor’s certification examination must meet one of the following qualifications:
- Graduate Engineer/Architect with 3 years of relevant work experience.
- Post-Graduate in Engineering/Architecture with 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Graduate Engineer/Architect with post-graduate degree in Management and 2 years of relevant work experience.
Maximum Attempts for Qualification
- A newly registered candidate is required to pass the examination by appearing in a maximum of 3 attempts per paper within 6 consecutive examinations.
- Candidate is declared to have passed the examination, provided he/she secures a minimum of 50% marks
- Candidate however, has the option to apply & re-register as a fresh candidate.
Supplementary Candidates
- A candidate who had registered & not qualified on or before 18th Exam is not eligible to appear in 24th NCE Exam(2024) as a supplementary candidate.
- The candidate, however, has the option to apply & register himself/herself as a fresh candidate.
Upgradation from Energy Manager to Energy Auditor
- Up-gradation is applicable only for EM registered candidates.
- The certificate issued to successful candidate are valid for a period of 5 years & renewable after every five years after attend a short-term refresher course

- Paper 1, 2 & 3 are common for Energy Manager & Energy Auditor & consist of both objective & descriptive type questions.
- Paper 4 for Energy Auditors is an open book examination and consists of descriptive & numerical questions. The degree of difficulty in Paper 4 will be comparatively much higher than the other papers.
- For Certification of Energy Managers candidate has to pass 3 papers viz., Paper 1 to Paper 3 & obtain a minimum of 50% marks
- For Certification of Energy Auditors candidate has to pass all 4 papers & obtain a minimum of 50% marks in each paper
- Marks of top ten candidates for Energy Managers & Energy Auditors will be announced on announcement of results. For this, only candidates passing the exam in their first attempt will be considered & supplementary candidates are not eligible.
